Wool on ice ~

Suzie found a treasure while going through her mom's housewares this past month, as her mom moved into a smaller place. Suzie knows I knit, so she brought the treasure to me.

At first glance, I see that it is fingering weight wool from Edinburgh, Scotland. Its not as soft as alpaca or merino, but is not scratchy. There are six hanks...Suzie said they were packaged with fabric and buttons, but Suzie pitched those and just kept the wool.

The tags have no gauge, or yardage.

Just the weight....In searching the web, I found this interesting post on this yarn.... and I promptly put the wool in our freezer, just in case there are any little beasties that have made homes in this yarn...not sure what to do with this yarn....

Inspired by Beate ~

I am hoping you've noticed along my blog roll that one of my favorites is Cloudberry Knits, written by Beate, a delightful and creative gal that lives far from my back yard...yet I visit her most days...through the magic of blogging. If you haven't visited Beate yet, please do, you'll love her as she makes you smile with her knitting, her flowers, her bike rides and her travel. I'll wait while you pop over there.....

She has bestowed an award upon me, and a challenge to state seven things not known about myself.....Yikes........ here goes....(I'll wake you up at the end, as these may be snoozers...)

1. I learned to crochet in grade school, taking a class at the Community Center of my home town. I remember that "snoods" were the rage, putting the crocheted snood over ones' hair bun. Eh gads....remember these?

2. Our wedding reception was also held in the Community Center of my home town (I did not wear my hair in a snood).

3. I can't recall exactly how and when I learned to knit, but I knit a few sweaters while living in Colorado for almost a year. I was inspired by my sweet Grandma Agnes who knit mohair and cobweb lace and all of our Christmas Stockings. All of her grand kids still hang ours by the fireplace each year ~ they are classic and amazing reminders of the skill that exists in our past. I often think of Grandma Agnes and know that she's with me as I knit.

4. (do I really need seven?) Before knitting the sweaters in Colorado, I was knitting a very lacy white square neck sweater, and showed it to Grandma Agnes, and she held up the front to my front and could not stop laughing as the square neck went past both shoulders ~ too big for even my Dad to wear (6 foot plus of him)....something about checking gauge that I missed...and all of her 4 foot 8 inch height laughed and laughed as she ripped it out for me...as she knew it would be too painful. Her wisdom, "If you're not going to check gauge, then make your knitting a color that your Dad would wear." My next sweater was grey.....crew neck... just in case....

5. I have fuchsia mohair of Grandma Agnes in my stash ~ its lovely ~ I'm not sure I'll ever be able to knit it. I've often wondered where her needles are ~ she was an amazing knitter.

6. I crocheted up a storm in college, once I lived off campus. Blankets for me and my roommates, and wedding gifts and baby blankets...crazy acrylic yarn and I loved it.

7. I feel a compulsive urge to finish projects...any one's projects will do....why is that?

Waiting for Webs ~

I am waiting patiently for the UPS truck to bring my package of yarn from Webs. (Hannah from Chicken News captured my waiting in these great photos - my daughter still rocks)

A package arrived, but it was the wrapping paper from the 75% off sale. So perhaps its time for a nap...*yawn*

Shadow, too, is waiting for Webs....
Hey, there's the UPS truck!
Let's go see!

Knit for Service ~

In the spirit of Martin Luther King Jr. and this "Service" weekend, I am knitting on my helmet liner for the troops.

It is a small way of providing service, but every bit helps. I recommend that you do some service knitting this weekend, as it feels really good.

Also, if you haven't checked out the YarnHarlot's blog lately, please do. She has inspired me and thousands of others to donate to Knitters without Borders/Doctors without Borders.

Thirty and counting ~

As I moved my Sock Summit socks from "On My Needles" to "2009 Completed Projects" on my blog's side bar, I was pleased (thrilled, actually) to see this is the 30th finished project of the year! That feels really good, and I'll even allow myself a bit of an "atta girl" grin.

Pictured here snug in my Fiber Trends clogs from a few years ago...(I do need to fix a hole in the bottom of the left clog....not sure how best to do that fix....) There are still so many projects I want to knit, and so many yarns I want to try out...and stitch patterns and techniques...hmmmm, I'd better quit grinning and start knitting!

Cast off ~

Record time to make mum's woolly socks! Partially due to the Christmas deadline push, partially due to the luscious yarn that continues to beckon me to knit with it, partially due to thinking great thoughts of mum and how cozy she will be while she's wearing thousands of hand knit alpaca stitches filled with love

...and, of course there are the size 6 needles...yes, I suppose that would be a rather large factor on knitting socks quickly!

Here is my dear H modeling the cozy socks and taking such fun pictures (she's the "daughter that rocks" on my blog sidebar...she's very clever at many pursuits!)

Big Ten Knitting ~

Just to set the record straight, I am thrilled that Michigan State beat University of Michigan last week in college football. When the two state rivals meet, I am always rooting for Michigan State, always. You may recall in a previous blog that State has an awesome Fight Song that includes, "...Fighting with a Vim..."

Michigan State beat Illinois on Saturday, and that is exciting too, however I was not able to see the game out here on the west coast. But we were able to watch Michigan ~ Big Ten football, which is still pretty fun to watch...

they almost won, and had an amazing second string quarterback in Robinson....and mum's woolly socks are getting bigger...

Tofutsie Wave too ~

Note: Have you noticed the rolling "My daughter rocks" that now rolls delightfully across the left column of my blog? Or have you noticed the clever yarn balls & needles that grace a new signature for me, plus all the little segments of my blog? Genius as she is, dear H made these for me, and I love them!!! Check out her own clever blog here.

I am making great progress on the Tofutsie Wave socks! They are looking lovely and I owe it all to the road trip knitting on the way to Oregon last week. I may even have them complete for the August Sock Summit!

Debbie Doo should be so proud of me, as she inspired me to Keep Knitting on these!!!! (Thanks Debbie!)

Harry Potter countdown ~

We can hardly wait for the opening of the Harry Potter Half Blood Prince movie tomorrow....in honor of the big day, I'm going to share the only Harry Potter knitting I've done: The Horcrux Socks, and they are lovely.... This picture doesn't show what a clever pattern it is, with the lightning shaped zig zag on the cuff. The pattern's designer is very talented, check out her blog here: Knitting as fast as I can

And the winner is...

Remember a few weeks back when I had two versions of the Candy Cane Llama hand spun scarf going? The yarn is variegated in a long repeat of pink and then a long repeat of mint green. One end was knit to make the colors show in horizontal stripes and the other version was a diagonal pattern to show the colors diagonally. Since the scarf is for H, I asked which version she liked the best, and she chose the same one that you, dear readers, chose... the diagonal scarf! Bravo to all!

And thanks to those that shared their favorite version on the blog comments...

Another way to celebrate ~

I keep thinking of other ways to celebrate one year of my yarn & knitting blog, and thought of another great idea. There are many knitting books that I borrow from the library on a regular basis. They are due in 3 weeks, and I return them, and then borrow them again when they reappear on the shelf. In honor of my one year blogiversary, I decided to check some prices on Amazon, and ordered this one! One of my Christmas hats will be one of the cable hats in the book....so it already will have a purpose...

plus, it will make me smile to not have to return it to the library!!!!

Happy Blog Anniversary ~

Wow ~ Happy Day ~ one year blog anniversary today! More Yarn Please has been going on for one year, and started as a challenge from my daughter, H.

She found it hard to believe that I could talk about yarn and knitting day after day... however, I have had no trouble....as I certainly think about yarn and knitting day after day...

It seems to me that there should be some celebration to mark such a momentous occasion... perhaps buying more yarn?

Google for more hats ~

Have you ever tried the Google Alerts for knitting? This is a great for learning about new patterns, yarn and techniques. I have a Google Alert for "knit hats" and "knit socks" and I'm thinking of adding "knit sweaters" just in case I'm missing some great patterns out there! Every day Google e-mails me all the Internet sitings of "knit hats" and blogs that include "knit hats" and its been a source for finding great blogs and patterns! Signing up for a Google Alert is easy to do, too, and easy to cancel. I had a Google Alert for "new yarn" and became overwhelmed with all the posts and sitings!!!!
Here is the latest Great Blog with great hats that I found from my Google Alerts! Check her out!

This is one of her hats ~ I LOVE the braided part and how it blends with the cables ~ and hand spun too - She is a great discovery!!!

Early Santa!

Santa came early and delivered 3 skeins of hand spun hand dyed yarn. The pink to the left was called peppermint but I think it is more hot pink.

Perhaps it will make a great scarf for rockin#10.

P.S. rockin#10 created a blog tonight ~ check out this link!
