College Road Trip Knitting ~

As we take our oldest back to college, we are a bit sad that our summer together is over. It was a short summer together since she spent the first seven weeks in Madagascar, yet we were able to get some camping trips squeaked in upon her return.
The only good part of taking her back to college, other than her great apartment, a funny grocery shopping trip and her great roommates was road trip knitting for me....

Ah, this sparkle scarf is looking good!  A great blend of yarn and pattern, plus these lovely Signature needles are a joy to knit with!
Looking forward to more secret knitting on this project while family is gone!

Sparkle Cast On ~

With family out of town this week, it is time for serious and secret Christmas knitting! For those of us that knit holiday gifts, we know it is difficult to surprise members of our family with knitted items as knitting that special gift takes more time than a secret trip to the mall to purchase an item and hide it in a bag until it can be wrapped.
So, I cast on a super sparkle-y scarf today for a super sparkle girl that I dearly love!  Let's see how fast I can knit this so it can be done by Christmas, plus keep it secret!

Blocking Secrets ~

I have to admit to the secret of why my cowls and scarves have been looking so amazing lately. Well, it is not my knitting. No, really, it is not me.  My secret is Patti.  Yes, Patti.  She is a super blocker and has figured out how to block a sow's ear into a silk purse, or a long curled hot dog thingy into a lovely cowl.
I am not sure how she does it, as I have blocked many projects in my knitting career, yet none look so "display in a knitting shop" worthy as those blocked by Patti. Truthfully, we have seen displays in knitting shops that desperately need to be blocked by Patti.  Her blocked projects should actually be on the cover of Interweave or Vogue Knitting.  I'm serious, she is THAT good!
P.S.  She is Jitteryknitter's secret too....just had to come clean on that too...

New Year's Project ~

I had the urge to cast on a few projects on New Years' Day. Once was the Encompass Cowl for my oldest daughter, as she said she would love a few more cowls to get through the winter at college.
The second cast on was another flouncy scarf for my youngest, as I knew it would knit fast.  As it happened, I was able to cast off today as well since I was able to have a lot of knitting time today, after getting all my energy going with boot camp!

Christmas Knitting ~

I did a lot of knitting for Christmas gifts this year, and love all the finished objects.  Here are some highlights:
Chirality cowl for college daughter..
Boston Strong hat for high school cross country and track runner...
Walking Rib cowl for college daughter
Plus each of my daughters received hand knit socks, but I don't have any finished pictures here...but I will post them here soon!

Just Weird ~

My youngest teenager is serious about these scarves. When I asked her which one I should knit first, she agonized over the choice. Finally she announced,"Gotta love the neon." And I do love neon.
But knitting this is not knitting, it is just weird.

Birthday Cashmere ~

So happy that the cashmere birthday scarf is done. The colors are beautiful and yarn continues to be so soft. The pattern was a perfect choice, too.
I will put it inside this fun Smiley Face tin, and she will love the tin and the scarf! Happy birthday sister!

Birthday scarf ~

Almost done with this lovely cashmere scarf, and wondering why scarves take sooooo long to knit? Perhaps it is the repetition of four rows, over and over and over, with no change in turning a heel or working the cuff....almost hypnotic...
Still so lovely, yet takes so long to knit...yarn is so soft and a delight to work with...love these sherbert colors in the summer sunshine....This will be a perfect birthday knit for my sister....

More of these, Really?

I was at a yarn shop with my youngest, and I was checking out some lovely yarn and thinking about what might be in the sale bin.... and she said, "I found the perfect yarn for me!" Which, translated means, "Mum, you can use this yarn and knit something fabulous for me, since I know you want to knit for me..."
Yes, really....two skeins of that "not even yarn" holey stuff that one jabs to create a ruffly scarf thingy.... I have made her this one and this one of these jabbing ruffly thingy scarves, and I thought that was enough....but...no, she wants two more...one in neon, and one with sparkles.....Really?

Knitting in Public ~

Very lucky day today, as I was knitting with the Jitteryknitter in several public places today. A few coffee shops, and one that was in a bookstore...where I realized that I was knitting the same socks that this famous fox is wearing....
Also knitting in public at a yogurt shop, outside in a lovely plaza. Just a bit of rain and a bit of sunshine, the perfect blend for outside knitting.
Bonus to be knitting on more than one item in one day, as the recent days are so busy that it is challenging to knit on anything! Perhaps now that summer has arrived (at least on the calendar, if not with our weather) we can do more knitting!!

Ahhhhh, Cashmere ~

This cashmere yarn is really soft. Really. Plus it is feather light, and I have to be careful as I pull it out of the wound ball, as it is ever so fragile as a 2-ply. So soft, and the colors are so soothing for me, especially as we are getting such a teaser for spring...daffodils are out (and getting poured on by the rain right now) and are the happiest of yellow in our yard!
This scarf is the happiest of pastels, outside on our deck, right before the rain started! Gotta love this cashmere!

Cashmere Deal ~

At our November Yarn Yoga, there were two skeins of wicked soft cashmere silk in the sale bin. So lovely, yet still pricey even on sale. We all drooled over them and smooshed them, and wished we could get them..... Kathy couldn't pass them up, so she bought both of the skeins. Since it was lace weight, she used both ends from both skeins and started knitting a garter stitch scarf using 4 strands of this lovely yarn. When we were at Madrona, and the scarf was about 6 inches long, she decided that it needed sequins and sparkle. She found white sparkle/sequins at Madrona, and told us she was going to rip out her scarf, start over and add the sparkle/sequins.  Well, we had an intervention….I said it wouldn't be soft on her neck anymore if she added sparkles/sequins, Marion told her it was, "Just not right" to compromise cashmere/silk with novelty yarn.... Lisa just said, "No, no way..."
To compromise, I said I would knit her a lacy scarf with one skein if she would give me the other skein…no sparkles, no sequins…just a lacy cashmere and silk scarf for her....and she agreed to the deal. So far, her scarf looks pretty good....not sparkly, but oh, so soft!!! Plus I get the other skein of this amazing yarn!
